Colorectal Cancer Prevention: Do not hope for too much of the healthy foods

colon cancer is the best cancer prevention: not only rely on diet
Colorectal cancer belongs to the three most common cancer types. A healthy lifestyle can prevent many diseases. Nutrition is particularly important here. But that alone is not enough. Medics point out that early detection studies are the best prevention.

Do not lose sight of early detection studies
According to health experts, colorectal cancer is the third most common cause of cancer in men after prostate cancer and lung cancer, and the second most common cause of death among women after breast cancer in Germany. To prevent a disease, you should eat balanced and move a lot. However, people with a healthy lifestyle should also lose sight of the important early detection tests. Especially not those in whose family colon cancer has already occurred.

A balanced diet with lots of vegetables, fruits and nuts as well as low meat contributes to reducing the risk of colorectal cancer. The best prevention, however, is colonoscopy.(Image: karepa /

Bowel Repellent is the Best Prevention
In scientific research it was shown that one can prevent colon cancer with full-fledged diet. Also the daily consumption of nuts contributes to a natural cancer protection.

The frequent consumption of red meat, on the other hand, is considered to be a risk factor for colorectal cancer. In contrast, vegetarians get rare colorectal cancer, as a study by US researchers showed.

More about the topic:
  • Attention to supposedly healthy foods
  • Too much salt: Eating salt content in food often much too high
  • Health: How much mold on food is still tolerable?

If you want to prevent cancer, you should not rely solely on dietary recommendations, warns the Association of German Gastroenterologists in a report from the news agency dpa.

According to the experts, the best prevention is still a colonoscopy. In this investigation - called colonoscopy - polyps were detected and removed early. In the ideal case, a tumor does not develop at all.

Early detection can save lives
Legally insured persons have the right to an early test for the blood in their stools.

From the age of 56, a colonoscopy is paid by the fund. Ten years later, patients can again undergo colonoscopy.

Preventive screening is particularly important when colorectal cancer has already occurred in the family. Early detection can save lives, because a tumor in the throat or rectum grows slowly and does not cause problems for most of the patients for a long time.

"In the case of colorectal cancer patients, the risk of developing also increases by two to four times as compared to the general population," said the spokeswoman of the established gastroenterologists, Dr. Dagmar Mainz, in a communication."Especially for these people, a preventive colonoscopy is urgently recommended."

Balanced diet and regular exercise
According to the gastrointestinal physicians can promote an unhealthy diet with lots of sugar and animal fat cancer.

It is therefore recommended to eat balanced vegetables, fruit, some fish, little meat and vegetable fats. By eliminating smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, the risk of colorectal cancer can also be reduced. And also regular movement protects against cancer.

However, if symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, or even blood in the stool occur, the physician should first be consulted, who in case of doubt decides to consult a gastroenterologist.(ad)
