Researchers: Smoking often leads to gum infections

Proper oral hygiene can effectively prevent the disease
Anyone who smokes has an increased risk of gum disease. This is reported by the German Association of German Pharmacists in the current issue of its magazine "Neue Apotheken Illustrierte".Besides that, a higher age, stress and a weakened immune defense would increase the risk for diseases of the Zahnhalteapparates. However, there are simple ways to prevent the problem.

In the worst case, dental loss
Inflammation of the teeth holding apparatus( periodontal disease) has now developed into a national disease. As the "Neue Apotheken Illustrierte"( April 15, 2016) currently reported, 80 percent of the adults show parodontitis precursors. The inflammation can occur when the accumulation of bacteria on the tooth surface or the plaque is not regularly and thoroughly removed, explains the German Association of German Pharmacists' Associations in their magazine. As a result, inflammation of the gingiva( gingivitis) develops, which can spread to the jaw bone and can lead to the loss of teeth even if the treatment is absent.

Periodontitis is often recognized very late
The elderly are particularly vulnerable, since they have an increased susceptibility to diseases of the tooth holding apparatus, according to the article. Other risk factors include tight, difficult-to-clean teeth, carious defects, scaling, an insufficient amount of saliva, and an incorrect diet, as they all offer the bacteria an ideal breeding ground. Likewise, smoking, stress and a weakened immune response favor the disease risk. Often, the inflammation of the gums does not initially cause any discomfort and is therefore only discovered late. This makes a treatment all the more difficult.

Two times a day cleaning and flossing
Therefore, a good oral hygiene is particularly important with an increased risk. To prevent this, the teeth should be cleaned regularly twice a day: "Daily oral hygiene consists in the cleaning of the tooth surfaces with the toothbrush and the interdental spaces with dental floss or interstitial brushes", the Kassenzahnärztliche Bundesvereinigung( KZBV) is quoted in the magazine. If it is a more aggressive form of periodontal disease, an antibiotic can also be useful. In addition, there are general preventive measures in the regular check by the dentist and the professional cleaning of the teeth.(nr)
