Mineral water in the test: plastic affects the water taste

Untypical Taste of Mineral Water in Plastic Bottles
Mineral water is one of the favorites of the Germans. Most products are bought with medium carbonic acid content. The Stiftung Warentest has now examined more than 30 of these medium mineral waters. Among other things, they found that water in plastic bottles sometimes tasted untypical. Overall, only every third product was "good".

Mineral water with medium carbon dioxide in the test
To keep cool in the current heat, it helps to drink a lot. Mineral water is one of the most drunken beverages in Germany. It should sparkle but not too strong: "Most citizens buy mineral water with medium carbonic acid content - also called medium," writes the Foundation Warentest on their website. The experts have now scrutinized 30 of these products and published the results in the magazine "test"( issue 07/2017).

Piping water as well as mineral water
There have been many studies that have shown that tap water is as good as mineral water in many regions.

This has also been confirmed in a test conducted by Stiftung Warentest last year. The experts then examined still mineral water.

  • Recall of mineral water with residues
  • In a recent test, the experts have now dedicated to mineral waters of medium carbonic acid content. Only about every third product was rated as "good".

    Cancer Exciting Chromium
Not all products were as unaffected as one might think. In some cases, unwanted substances were included, some of them also detected faults in the taste.

A total of eleven of the 30 tested water samples were good for the analysis, 18 were satisfactory and one received the grade "sufficient".

The reason for the devaluation was that it contains comparatively much carcinogenic chromium( VI) at 0.5 micrograms per liter.

"Even with a permanent intake of water, the health risk is still rather low", says a press release.

    Untypical taste by plastic bottles
Traces of sweeteners, pesticide degradation products and a corrosion inhibitor were found in five waters. The contents were however harmless to health.

"The term" natural mineral water "is in question," said Ina Bockholt from the Stiftung Warentest.

The bottle material also causes problems. Many waters in plastic bottles taste untypically lemony.

The taste comes from the acetaldehyde, which is produced during the production of plastic and can pass from the bottles into the water. Even the smallest quantities lead to variations in taste.

Plastic bottles have a bad reputation for years. The war testers evaluated the packaging with "deficient".
